The World of Hubble

Since the beginning of the new year, I have been doing a Dog-a-Day project on Instagram (as some of you are already aware). I was inspired in part by Sally Muir’s delightful book A Dog A Day in which she sketched, painted, inked and printed the various dogs she encountered in all their wonderful, amazing, and delightful ways. I have made it two months so far mostly posting photographs of Jack Henry and Hubble. It has been an enlightening, if somewhat scary undertaking. 365 projects can be daunting anyway, but when you begin to narrow the parameters it can become even more so. I found myself having to be more flexible and aware of possibilities rather than trying to stage a shot every single day. I do not have that much patience and neither do the dogs. So it has been more a combination of the everyday, the unexpected, and the more formal.  Some hits and some misses and a lot in between.

My hope is that like Sally Muir, I will begin to take more chances–not just with my guys–but with other dogs. And who knows? Perhaps I may be so bold as to try working with other media and mediums.

The photographs shown here feature some of Hubble’s various wanderings and activities in the course of this project.  If interested in seeing more, check us out at @littledogslaughed

Hubble and the Yellow Tulip

For a dog that likes to tear around in the backyard garden, Hubble is clearly nonplussed when it comes to dealing with nature indoors. He was not always like that, but lately, he almost acts as if getting near a flower is  personal affront-flowers are meant to be torn out and trampled on or used as a launch pad-

Unlike Jack Henry who does take time to stop and smell the roses-

So Beautiful

Hubble clearly is not sure about having the vase in his personal space–

Hubble and Yellow Tulip

I like this image okay, but what I wish I had done was to step back more, like I did with  the image below taken earlier in the week-there is something to me more pleasing to have more distance between the camera and the subject-but that is just me-what I do like is the more subtle tones of both. I have been wanting to use more muted colors and backgrounds as of late-

High-Style Hubble

Among the loot under the tree for the dogs, was this snappy plaid jacket for Hubble. While not possessing the formidable wardrobe of his brother, Jack Henry (who at last count owns two sweaters, three coats, including a lounging *coat*), Hubble does like to wear sweaters and a coat when needed. He looks pretty snappy, I must say.

Being Hubble

Well-that was a session. After making Hubble come in after catching him tormenting a poor possum, I got him dressed and ready to do for his picture.

As I was looking through the shots, I was struck again by what a funny looking little guy he is. His Christmas collar is too large, he was still overly excited about his missed opportunity with Master Possum and in general presented a kind of bedraggled appearance–like many other little boys I have known. But I like this picture-it really captures for me an essence that is most distinctly Hubble. And as you might expect, as soon as we were done, outside he went again in search of his new *friend.*

Hubble and the Cloak of Darkness

When you are little dog, it is awfully hard to be taken seriously as scary.

Ask Hubble.

So in the spirit of Halloween and with the help of the little guy and a piece of black cloth (aka the Cloak of Darkness) I set out to create something that shows Hubble as his secret Halloween self. It also gave me an opportunity to just experiment with some apps in ways that I had not worked with before. I added the Halloween pumpkins to soften the lines and dark colors and I guess too, to soften the image a bit.

Hubble was not happy about that. He wanted zombies.

Experiments with Hubble

Some Hipstamatic portraits of Hubble for today. Right now, I seem to be in a portrait taking mood, in part, because work has been very busy this month. And I have not been able to really think of anything else to try for now. But hopefully after August, things will slow down a bit and Hubble particularly can go on some new adventures.

Hipstamatic Hubble

I have been experimenting more with Hipstamatic this week and tried out the Pinhole lens combined with the Runway film-but by processing it I came away with a much softer effect which I liked better.

Hubble loves being on the cutting edge-

The Return of the Hubble

It has been a long time I know; Hubble is ready to start the fall with new adventures. Jack Henry too, but he does not like to share space with the little dog, as many of you know. And Anna? She is enjoying the cooler weather and her new bed.

For today, a different kind of portrait of Hubble for a possible postcard mailing.

Today’s Dog Quote:

and caught in a Hipstamatic frame to boot.

This week over at Move the Chair I have been experimenting with Hipstamatic which has been annoying, exciting, frustrating and challenging-take your pick. I probably have experienced it all working with this app.

Part of the challenge certainly has been the diverse type of films, lenses and flashes-it can be very overwhelming. But I am glad to have finally tackled it somewhat and am a little more comfortable navigating around.

Here is Master Hubble captured with a daguerreotype film and lens. One image I ran through Snapseed to clean it up a bit more.
